As a music lover, my passion for music started in adolescence, influenced by non-mainstream music, followed by blues, leading to my career as a blues musician.
I am a passionate blues vocalist and harp player. I love to express my ideas and experiences in life by composing songs with fun or meaningful lyrics, which I combines skilfully with soulful singing and harp playing, as well as dabbling on guitar and keyboards.
The Evolution of Smokin Sam Music
My early musical influences included Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendricks, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and early Fleetwood Mac. My blues harp playing style is moulded along the greats of Peps Persson, Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and Australia’s own Broderick Smith.
Listening to other music genres, I also become heavily influenced by bands such as King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart which influenced my writing material.
My musical career began at the age of 16, when I began singing and playing cover songs from The Rolling Stones with his first band, ‘South City Union’. I was later invited to join the band ‘Fat Alroy’ and during that time was introduced to the music of ‘Taste’, fronted by Rory Gallagher.
My career as a musician was now established, and as I mixed my reportare of old blues songs from old idols with later music influences, I began to expand my musical taste by listening to bands like King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis. As my music tastes evolved and changed, I formed my next band, ‘Clutch Cargo’, playing the underground scene for a few years, playing all original songs.
Once Clutch Cargo was disbanded, I took a long break from the music scene.
In 2005 I re-joined the blues music scene after attending an MBAS jam night. I joined up and started participating in the jam nights and other events. Through this, I met some wonderful people and with plenty of encouragement I formed my first blues band, Synergy Blue, and soon after expanded out to do freelance work under the name of ‘Smokin Sam’, as well as ‘Smokin Sam & Cargo Blues Band’.
I received the nick-name of ‘Mr Blues Passion’ as I played at many venues and festivals throughout Melbourne and Victoria with Synergy Blue as well as many special guest appearances as ‘Smokin Sam’ at blues and music jams and sharing the stage with Geoff Achison, the late Dutch Tilders, Sweet Felicia, Chris Wilson, Ian Collard, Eugene ‘Hide Away’ Bridges and many more.
2012 was my first international tour of Indonesia, playing at venues around Bali as a special feature guest, in Ubud – Jazz Café & Lezat, Seminyak – Zappaz Bar, Mannekepis Jazz & Blues Bistro. & Echo Beach.
In 2013 I did a Bali Tour, playing at venues around Bali as a special feature guest in Ubud – Lezat, Seminyak, Zappaz Bar.
In my 2014 Bali Tour, I played in Ubud – at the LOL Bar, Siam Sally & Lezat, as a special guest playing with Cool Bananas, Ronald Gang, LegianBar Blues & Lippo Mall with Ronald Gang, Seminyak, Zappaz Bar playing with Soul Brothers, at Sanur performing at Casablanca as special guest with The Ripper and part of Casablanca blues jam night and Arena Hotel special guest Crazy Horse.
Movie Sound Tracks Debut
The song ‘Killer in Me’ marks the first single release from the monster soundtrack to John Jarratt’s film and directorial debut, StalkHer.
Recorded in Melbourne’s Backlot Studios and tended to by a stellar production team, ‘Killer In Me’ boasts all the hallmarks of top-notch country pop/rock.
The track also features Jarratt’s Stalkher co-star and three-time AFI nominee, Kaarin Fairfax on backing vocals as well as showcasing renown Australian blues musician myself as Smokin Sam on harmonica.
In 2014 I decided to form the Hume Blues Club, and with a few fellow blues lovers in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
